4 Things To Try Before Scrapping Your Website

You may not have to blow up your website and rebuilt it. You may be able to salvage it. We don’t have to tell you that a website rebuild is expensive and time-consuming. It almost always costs you more money and takes more time than you anticipated.

However, all that may not be necessary. You may be able to try tweaking it in a few crucial places before you start over. Many of these tweaks can be done for free or for almost no money. So before you go big and invest in a new site, try these smaller changes.

1. Upgrade Your Web Hosting

If you went with a cheap host when you built this site, you might have doomed it to fail before it even started. Cheap hosting is cheap for a reason. It’s slow and unreliable. This is particularly important if you have an eCommerce site or any sort of online store. Slow speeds will cost you sales, as a 100-millisecond delay in load time can cause conversion rates to drop by 7%.

Your current host may make it logistically difficult to leave them, but transitioning your site to a more reliable website hosting provider can boost your speeds and breathe new life into your existing site.

2. Fix Your Calls-To-Action

Your users may not be clicking around your site because your call to action (CTA) is the problem. A single word on a button can make a huge difference in how many people click it. For example, the word “Submit” traditionally does poorly because it’s uninspired, boring, with no apparent benefit. Try switching it to a verb or action that promises value from the click. Consider “Download” or “Buy.”

That being said, you don’t want it to be too overwhelming or committal. For example, if you’re giving away a free trial of your product for a month, you might want to avoid “Subscribe” or “Sign up” for your button. People may think, “I don’t want to commit. I just want the trial for now.” Changing your CTAs can really unplug your sales funnel.

3. Try New Headlines

Flat and dull headlines may also be hurting your site. This is true of both your landing pages and your blog. Your content could be helpful and insightful, but you need to earn your would-be reader’s attention with a great headline.

Lock into your audience’s pain points with an emotional headline. If you do wedding hairstyles for brides, you may have a cute-enough headline, “Perfect Hair on Your Special Day.” Why not take it to the next level with a headline that asks, “What Happens to Your Hair if it’s Humid at Your Outdoor Wedding?”

This headline has now:

  1. Earned your reader’s attention
  2. Proven you’re an expert by raising a point they may not have thought of

Tweaking your headlines can also boost how these pages perform on social media. As you can see, you don’t have to build a new website from scratch. You may simply have to upgrade your host, your CTAs, and your headlines. All of these solutions are free or cheap, and will only cost you a little bit of time and thought. However, the results can save you thousands of dollars.
