Advantages & Disadvantages Of Electric Scooters

Electric scooters are one of the most economical and fun ways to travel. If you live in a city center or a scooter-friendly town, you may be considering an e-scooter for your everyday travel needs.

Before investing in a scooter, it’s important to consider its advantages and disadvantages. It’s also important to know what to look for when choosing a scooter.

Advantages Of The Electric Scooter

There are many advantages to using an electric scooter, including:

Inexpensive Form Of Transportation

Electric scooters are battery-powered. While it costs money to recharge the battery, the overall cost of using and maintaining an e-scooter is far less expensive than a conventional gas-powered vehicle.

The upfront cost of purchasing a vehicle alone is 10+ times more expensive than the cost of an electric scooter. In areas where fuel prices are high, the cost savings are even greater.

Easy To Use

Electric scooters are easy to use, and they don’t require a license to operate. Just hop on and go. It may take some practice to learn how to balance on an e-scooter, but once you’ve mastered that, you’re ready to go.

If you struggle to ride a regular scooter, you can always look for a ride on an electric scooter, which is similar to a motorbike.

Environmentally Friendly Way To Travel

Because an e-scooter is battery-powered, it doesn’t produce emissions that harm the environment. The manufacturing of the scooter and recharging will impact the environment, but not nearly as much as gas-powered vehicles.

Convenient

Riding an electric scooter is convenient. You don’t have to worry about traffic or having to obtain a license. Just charge up your scooter, hop on and go.

You can also take your scooter where vehicles cannot go. For example, you can ride to the nearby train station or bus, fold up your scooter, hop on and take it with you to the next town – or wherever you’re traveling to.

Disadvantages Of The Electric Scooter

There are many advantages to owning a scooter, but there are some drawbacks to consider as well.

Needs To Be Recharged

Obviously, an e-scooter will need to be recharged from time to time – just as a vehicle will need to be refueled. However, battery issues can happen at inconvenient times, and it may not be easy to recharge.

Generally, electric scooters can go 10-80 miles on a single charge, depending on the battery. Most will go about 10-15 miles before needing to be recharged.

For some, that’s enough to run errands, tour the town or commute to work. For others, it’s an impractical option for transportation.

Not Ideal For All-Weather Travel

Electric scooters are easy to ride, and they’re a great way to enjoy the outdoors. However, they’re not the best option for traveling in wet or windy weather.

How To Choose An Electric Scooter?

You’ve decided that an electric scooter is right for you, but how do you choose one? Here are some things to consider.

Find A Reputable Supplier

Before you even start comparing models, make sure that you find a reputable electric scooter supplier. Look for a supplier that offers quality scooters and has great ratings from customers.

When comparing suppliers, consider the following:

  • How long have they been in business?
  • How responsive is their customer service?
  • How are their scooters made?
  • What materials are used?

A quality electric scooter is worth the higher cost because it will give you more use and last much longer than a lower quality scooter.

Stand-Up Or Ride-On?

Another important thing to consider is whether you want an electric scooter with a seat or a stand-up model.

  • A stand-up model is a conventional scooter. Just as the name suggests, you stand up on the scooter with both feet on a narrow platform.
  • A ride on model is a scooter with a seat that looks and operates similarly to a motorbike.

Both styles have advantages and disadvantages. It ultimately comes down to your personal preference.

Consider Portability

Do you want an e-scooter that’s easily portable? If so, you may want to consider a foldable electric scooter. A foldable scooter can easily be carried with you and even taken on a train or bus. A shoulder strap or handle will make it even easier to bring your scooter with you.

Electric scooters have benefits and drawbacks. Consider both when deciding whether this is the right form of transportation for you.
