All You Need To Know About Google Algorithms

Today, large search engines like Google do not look like a homogeneous system. They are a symbiosis of complex mechanisms, algorithms, robots, and other elements. All these form a high-end search engine product. That’s why when running a business online, you need to know all the specs of Google operation and its principles of content processing and site ranking to achieve good results.

In this article, we will take a closer look at Google search engine algorithms, their purpose, and importance for your site performance. At the moment, there are over 30 algorithms. Their number keeps growing since Google reinforces its data evaluation requirements. Thus, for example, there was the Google algorithm update in May 2020, which you need to be aware of for your site not to go down in SERP.

What Are Google Algorithms?

The algorithms are special mathematical formulas by which search engines solve the problem of adding sites to a search result page. As you know, a search engine searches for sites based on certain keywords or phrases. It is the algorithms that allow you to find the website that most closely matches the query, eliminating sites that are irrelevant for you or the resources that use prohibited optimization methods.

Guided by a particular algorithm, a search engine analyzes the site, finds out the presence of the key phrase or its synonym in the content, and decides how much the site matches the user’s request. Depending on the degree of content compliance and its quality, webpages are added to the SERP. Here are some principles Google uses to analyze and rate web content.

1. Panda Algorithm

The Google Panda algorithm is focused on the detection of non-unique, overspanned, and devoid of meaning content. It also detects poor-quality and automatically generated content. Everything related to content is considered to be the priority of this algorithm: its availability, uniqueness, volume, quality are some criteria Panda checks.

Recommendation for site owners:

  • Create unique content — it refers to photos, videos, texts;
  • Do not strive to optimize content for the search algorithm, target real users instead;
  • The quality, volume, structure of the content matters.

2. Penguin Algorithm

The appearance of the principle is associated with the use of links from third-party resources. Many online platforms applied this strategy to increase their trust rate and value in the eyes of Google. That’s why Penguin has been developed; the algorithm is engaged in the search for non-fitting/ irrelevant external links.

What does the Penguin check?

  • The availability of purchased links;
  • The presence of external links from sites with a bad reputation or spammy content;
  • Links coming from donor site networks to the main site;
  • Non-fitting link anchors;
  • Links leading from pages that are completely irrelevant in content.

3. Google’s Pirate Update

This algorithm is designed to combat resources containing pirated content: videos, photos, and more. The operation of this algorithm is based on direct complaints from users of resources containing pirated content. Based on received complaints, Google decides to lower the site in the SERP or ban it.

What needs to be done to avoid sanctions? The crucial thing is to ensure that no pirated content is present on the site. Try to avoid posting similar content on the online resource of yours. If copyright holders complain about piracy, then avoiding sanctions is almost impossible.

Final Verdict

Almost every month, Google adds new algorithms to its active list. One way or another, new changes affect sites’ position on SERP as well as its ranks and performance. In order not to fail here, it is critically important to check the ranking specks of the search engine.
