Burritobot Makes Delicious 3D Printed Burritos With Fresh Salsa

The way we currently eat in first world countries won’t be sustained indefinitely. Experts say that we’ll have to make major changes because of land mass, pollution and population. Basically if we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle yet have enough food, we’ll have to start eating other things, like insects. A few years ago Richard wrote about this in an article called Gross Foods You’ll Want To Eat Anyway. But what if there is another way? What if we could 3D print burritos and fresh salsa in minutes?

3D printed food isn’t a new concept. People have been doing it for a while now. Imagine having a 3D printer in your kitchen where you could efficiently print the food you need to eat in order to stay healthy. When I’ve thought about 3D food printing in the past, I’ve always thought of printing things like lettuce and vegetables. This is the first time I’ve seen the process used for something as fun as burritos and fresh salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

This is called the Burritobot. It is controlled by an iOS smartphone app. You choose the condiments you want on your burrito right from your phone (the fresh salsa, guacamole, sour cream or whatever). According to Vimeo, “The Burritobot 3D prints an edible extrusion of configurable Mexican food employing a hybrid of digital fabrication and molecular gastronomy. It’s digital gastronomy for the hungry masses.”

In reality, I can’t imagine we’d own a 3D printer which is only designed to print one kind of food. Instead, we’d most likely have a 3D printer that prints all kinds of different foods; however, the idea of having a 3D printer just to make burritos is still delicious. Could this be the ‘fast food’ of the future? It may sound crazy now, but you never know what could happen…
