Game Boy Mod Turns Game Boy Into Android Game Controller

One of the best things about technology is that sometimes old stuff becomes new again. What I mean is that when it comes to recycling, technology is one of the best hosts. The magic of turning an old retro gadget into a futuristic and once again usable gadget is a geek’s favorite pastime. If I were to list all the things we have written about that have taken the recycling route, I would have to sit here for days. Fortunately, I am not going to do that. Instead, I am going to take a closer look at a gadget that most of us know pretty much everything about. The gadget I am talking about is the Game Boy. This mesmerizing retro gadget was recently the focus of a complete makeover. It became a Game Boy mod to be reckoned with.

As with any gadget, handhelds tend to get boring after extensive usage. Maybe that was the reason why Instructables’ gadgeteer alpinedelta decided to ruin a completely functional Game Boy and turn it into a controller. This controller ranks quite high as a Game Boy mod to any Android user, or at least I imagine so. We don’t see many Android accessories here at Bit Rebels, nor do we see many Game Boy mods either. So when this mod appeared, we were all over it.

This Game Boy mod is put together with a Game Boy, the guts of a Wiimote and an Android phone case. By any extent of the imagination, this must have taken quite some tinkering to put together. The Wiimote handles the Bluetooth conversation between the Game Boy mod and the Android phone itself. The cool thing is that the responsiveness of this Game Boy mod is quite impressive. Usually when you are working with Bluetooth, you have a slightly noticeable delay, but that seems to have been minimized somehow. It’s good to see that there are people so dedicated to the Android platform. When someone has recycled something retro and old, it’s always fun to check it out, and this is definitely one of those gadgets. Big props to the builder for the mastery skills it took to put this Game Boy mod together.
