Google Fibre For Communities! 1 Gig per Second

Have you ever wondered what it will be like to have an ultra fast broadband to surf the net?  While going through the web, I stumbled into this neat project that Google is planning to launch.  They are going to do it first in the United States.

Google is planning to build, and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. They plan to deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabyte per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. They will offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

Their goal is to ultimately see what can be done with higher speed access with specific intentions in mind:

Next generation apps: They want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine.

New deployment techniques: They want to test new ways to build fiber networks; to help inform and support deployments elsewhere, then share key lessons learned with the rest of the world.

Openness and choice: They want to operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory, and transparent way.

Now they are calling people to send an RFI (requests for information) and giving people until March 26th, 2010 to send them in. You can check it out more on their site HERE.
