3D Replica Of Google Glasses Now Available For Home Printing

The consumer’s version of the Google Glass glasses is expected to be released at the end of 2013, and it is said to cost around $1,500. It’s a price that plenty of people say is way too high if Google has any chance of competing with today’s powerful smartphones. There has been extensive marketing efforts applied to the Google Glass glasses in order to ramp up interest. But what if you could actually print your own Google Glass glasses? What if a 3D replica was as good?

I doubt anyone would buy the original Google Glass glasses if you could actually create your very own pair. Why not spend that $1,500 on a 3D printer instead and actually take innovation where it belongs – into the hands of people who are trying to solve a problem? That is exactly what designer Sunny Gao did. Sunny put together a 3D model that can be used as blueprints for printing your very own Google Glass glasses. The 3D replicated glasses will look almost exactly the same as the $1,500 glasses that you would have to buy in order to get the true experience.

However, just because you have the ability to 3D replicate the Google Glass glasses doesn’t mean all its functions will be incorporated as well. We’re pretty much just talking about the outer shell of the glasses – the frame so to speak. Nonetheless, the 3D replica blueprints should come in handy for anyone who wants to create their very own Google Glass glasses. Well, by adding their own spin to them that is.

3D printing is making it big in 2013, that’s for sure. I personally think that we’ll see more and more of these “framework” blueprints popping up over the coming years. It gives innovators a chance to explore new venues and technologies without having to completely design an exterior when all they want is to change, modify or refine the interior, if you know what I mean. It’s a kind of reverse engineering that we haven’t seen before. The ability to reverse engineer these things wasn’t even available a couple of years ago. 3D printing is definitely going to push innovation forward at an ever faster pace. The 3D replica model can be downloaded over at Sunny’s Baidu account.
