If you can’t get celebrities to wear the clothes that you design, what do you do? You can do what Hong Kong-based designer Ricky Ma did and build a robot that looks exactly like Scarlett Johansson. Ricky spent more than $50.000 to complete the robot and compared to pictures of Scarlet the robot is pretty lifelike.
However, as the robot is mechanic once the robot moves it won’t fool anyone thinking it’s real. But that didn’t stop Ricky from building it. It is now a part of his studio and everyone coming to visit him should at least get the scare of a lifetime. I mean, hey, there’s Scarlett Johansson in your friend’s house. Well, that is until you realize she’s a “photocopy” of the real Scarlett Johansson.
The lifelike robot is made out of a 3D printed skeleton covered in a realistic silicone skin. “She” can answer simple questions and should make for a pretty dull dinner companion. Whether Ricky Ma uses the robot to play dress-up with the clothes he designs or just keep her for companionship is unknown.
The robot can move its arms and legs and also has a complex muscle structure in its face allowing “her” to make simple gestures. Should the robot ever come face to face with the real Scarlett Johansson it would probably result in a pretty trippy experience. Also, I don’t know if Scarlett would be particularly impressed with the agility of her “own” modeled body.
I have to admit, though, that the modeled face is pretty impressive. It looks quite real, but when looking at the robot as a whole, it’s clear that some proportions are off. That seems to always be the case when you look at robots that are supposed to look like real humans.
Do you think we will be able to tell the difference between robots and humans in the future? Would a robot make a better friend than a real human? What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
