HAL 9000 Finally Realized, Alive & Responsive

If you are a movie fan, you know what I am talking about when I mention the HAL 9000. It is a self-aware computer in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (based on Arthur C. Clarke’s novel series Space Odyssey). Ever since we were introduced to the HAL 9000, we have all been mesmerized by the thought of artificial intelligence. People have tried to replicate it in a multitude of different creations. You might even remember my article about the HAL 9000 iPhone dock a while back. It was actually called the IRIS 9000, and it can still be purchased over at ThinkGeek. There is now something better though. It so happens that the HAL 9000 has finally been realized and brought to life.

If you are one of those people who can’t get the interaction you crave each day, this new HAL 9000 replica could possibly solve all your problems. It is based on the authentic blueprints from the cult 1967 movie. It has over 15 movie quotes recorded, and it will respond with the most appropriate one when you speak to it. The fact that this HAL 9000 replica is crafted in aircraft grade aluminum should be proof enough that the creators have put extra effort into making this as authentic as humanly possible.

It is currently made available by ThinkGeek, and it is one of those must-have gadgets for any geek. It is priced at $499.99 which in all fairness seems a little steep. However, the fact that it will activate and react when a button is pressed on any IR remote control for example is frickin’ hilarious. It also has an auto-preserve battery mode that kicks in after 2 minutes of inactivity. To turn it off completely, just rotate the lens ring. That is also the way to turn the HAL  9000 on. If you are a huge science fiction fan, you should totally go for this piece of technology. Maybe there is a way it can be upgraded. Maybe in the future you could teach it tricks. I don’t know. All I know is that it’s perfectly awesome to look at. That in itself is enough for me to get it. Meeeesmerizing…
