Have we finally cracked the Hologram secret?

As much as I hope and want to believe this is truly a wonderful and working way of showing holographic images, I can’t but wonder and keep being skeptical about its pure visual beauty. Watching these short but most awesome clips of what is called “HoloAD” show what appears to be the first and most solid way of showing holographic images. It is making me feel like Star Wars may not be so far away after all.

The pure and 360 degree view of these objects projected is just too good to be true and the more I look at it the more skeptical I become. Why? Well, it’s because people have been trying to figure out how to do this for ages and ages and now we suddenly have a working multi angle holographic image that seems to be projected on nothing but air. As the camera pans around the pyramid box you can fully enjoy the different angles of the holographic image and it’s just so cool.

But, as with everything today, the eye is fooling both your mind as well as your ever so eager willingness to believe its reality. What happens is that the pyramid glass is most likely to have a layer of 3D coating and in collaboration with the hardware and software of the demonstration pyramid, it is creating the same effect you would have seen while watching the slam hit movie Avatar using a pair of 3D glasses. It’s simply 3D without the glasses.

There was another company at the CES 2010 show in Las Vegas that demonstrated their prototype TV filter that also used 50% hardware and 50% software to create 3D images without the viewer having to use those pesky 3D glasses.

So, I am sorry to have to burst your bubble of hope, but this is purely a visual trick and the day the iPhone will be able to project holographic images will be the day when I will never again doubt the ability and creativity over at the industry leader Apple.
