When it comes to hot beverages, I think we all know how annoying the surprise of a scorching hot sip is. Sure, if you’re ordering yourself a hot cup of coffee, you know what to expect, but sometimes it seems the cooker kicked it up a notch to make it lava hot. The same goes for tea as well, it’s not a pleasant surprise at all. The good news is, it seems our hot beverage problems are soon to be over. This newly invented heat sensitive cup could prevent a whole lot of nasty surprises.
The heat sensitive cup will actually block any beverage that is too hot from ever reaching the inside of your mouth. The innovation comes from designers Yang Dongyun, Wu Yichen, Sang Xinxin, Gu Zhiyu and Lin Xia, and it could come to change how we drink our hot beverages forever. It’s not a hi-tech solution by any extent of the imagination, quite the contrary really. It’s a simple concept that uses some heat reactive material which expands when something is too hot.
The material in the lid of the cup, dubbed the Nohot Cup, will react when the beverage inside the cup hits 80 degrees C (or 176 degrees F). The material raises up and becomes a preventive bubble to keep you from drinking the hot beverage. When you try to drink it, your nose will hit the expanded bubble and prevent you from consuming the hot beverage in your cup.
When the beverage hits 60 degrees C (140 degrees F), the heat sensitive material will shrink, which means it’s safe to drink the hot beverage. The heat sensitive material could make drinking hot beverages a breeze. No more burns and annoyances. This should come as a huge relief for coffee shops all around the world since people continuously complain about their coffee or tea being too hot for them to drink. This heat sensitive beverage cup won the prestigious red dot award in 2012. Innovation like this makes the world a better place.
