Today when there are literally hundreds of different 3D printers to choose from, it can be hard to pick between them. What are the specs to look for and what exactly do we need? These are questions that can certainly be hard to answer, especially when you know that in a few months there will be a new model released that’s twice as good. For Arthur Sacek, it was an easy choice. He just decided to build his own LEGO 3D milling 3D printer and have a go at perfecting it.
3D printing is no doubt taking over the world in a way I think most people didn’t expect. This versatile way of producing products is an optimization tool that definitely has a place in our homes. So far, 3D printing hasn’t yielded a working consumer food printing machine, but there are most definitely people working on them as we speak. Through food printing, we will be able to order a pizza and have it printed for us in an instant. The LEGO 3D milling machine that Arthur has been able to create is a slightly different breed though.
By using LEGO as his primary building material, and using floral foam as the material to extract the 3D model from, Arthur has been able to create the most intriguing LEGO creation to date (especially with his 360-degree LEGO 3D milling machine). In the beginning, the result looked less than impressive, but that’s before Arthur took the floral foam off the machine’s printing plate and dusted it off. Even when he takes a vacuum and tries to clear off the loose parts, you start thinking it’s less than impressive.
Then in an instant, when he extracts the bits and pieces that are sticking to the printed product, you are suddenly aware of the perfection his machine is able to put out. I am sure with a little bit of refining, Arthur is going to be able to take this LEGO 3D milling machine to new heights and perhaps introduce new materials to the printer as well. I can’t help but sit back and watch this video over and over again in amazement over the fact that this piece of technology was actually created using primarily LEGO as its building blocks.
