What do you know about the history of gaming and the logos of the game developers who make your favorite games? Do you know when they started doing what they do or even when the companies that you buy games from were founded? Well, I can tell you I am not exactly the best at keeping track of these things. Every once in a great while I delve into them and try to find out a little more about what they are all about. I think the most recent one was actually Mojang, the makers of Minecraft. It is a Swedish company, so I was especially interested in seeing how they got started and what sparked the idea. But when it comes to the more legendary companies, I am pretty much clueless.
One of the more recognized ones is of course Nintendo, the makers of the game that pretty much the entire world knows about, Super Mario Bros. And then we of course have SEGA, who at one point wanted to take on Nintendo and give them a run for their money. As it turns out, SEGA couldn’t really take the pressure and Nintendo “won” the race by putting out far more captivating games than SEGA was ever able to do. However, they are still at it even though today Nintendo is a much larger company than SEGA is.
Logos in particular are subject to change as the years go by, and that is exactly what this article is all about. How much have the logos of Nintendo and SEGA actually changed since the companies were founded? We can easily find out by looking at the quite geeky infographic designed by The Logo Company. It is called Nintendo vs. SEGA: Video Game Logo Evolution, and it is a pretty in-depth look at both of these companies and how they have evolved into what they are today.
One thing that struck me the most was the dates. I actually had to look it up just to see if this was true or not. And yes, Nintendo was really founded in 1889 as a card game company. It’s amazing what you don’t know about these companies. It’s also striking how little both of these logos have developed since they were originally introduced. I mean, we are talking about a company (Nintendo) that has been around for over 100 years now, and they have kept their logo pretty much intact the entire time. Sure, there have been some color changes and whatnot, but other than that, it’s pretty much the same style. Now do you know of a company that was founded in the 1800s that we thought had only been around for a decade or two?
