With modern technology, not being able to play an instrument is no longer a roadblock for people who want to make music. The Korg Kaossilator 2 is a handheld, cost-effective synthesizer that allows nearly anyone to create full-length music tracks. If you’ve always wanted to make your own music without an instrument, here’s a quick primer on how to use a Kaossilator 2. More specifically, it’s a Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer that can recreate 150+ sounds, from the guitar strums to bass beats.
The Korg Kaossilator is the updated version of the original Kaossilator. Unlike other synthesizers, the Korg Kaossilator 2 is controlled by a touch-sensitive track pad. Moving your finger along the pad will produce a different range of sounds. Users can control the type of sound using the + and – arrows, which is then displayed on the middle screen. The Kaossilator 2 allows users to record and overdub two separate loops using the I and II buttons.
Microphone functionality is also included for those who wish to record vocals, and a microSD port allows users to transfer what they create onto their computer via .WAV files. Playing around with some of the more advanced features, like the arpeggiator and the BPM editor, allows users to create more complex and differentiated sounds. You can visit the Korg website for tutorials.
Turning the loops you make with the Kaossilator 2 into full-length songs requires a bit more work. The first thing you will need is a microSD card, which does not come with the device. This will allow you to transfer the loops made on the machine to your computer.
From there, you will need to import the .WAV files onto a music editing software. Because the Kaossilator 2 only records loops, you will need to splice together multiple loops in order to make a proper full-length song. Audacity is a free piece of music editing software that comes highly recommended. Once you have edited the loops together, you’ve got yourself a song!
The Kaossilator 2 is a casual device, and is priced as such. Real musicians use more expensive devices. That said, you don’t have to know how to play an instrument to create cool sounding tracks. Click here for an example of music created from a Kaossilator 2.
