Study Shows New iPhones And Samsung Galaxy S4 Are Not Very Durable

If you are in the market for a new smartphone, durability might be on your list of things to consider. If you’re an early adopter, you might not care about whether or not your new phone is sturdy. For those of us who have broken our phones more than once, it’s something to think about. I recently learned something interesting about the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the new iPhones with regard to durability, and I wanted to share it with you.

SquareTrade is a company that sells extended warranties on consumer electronics. They are also known for running some pretty intense durability tests on smartphones to determine how sturdy they are. They have run these tests for several years now, and they give each phone a grade between one and ten. The higher the grade, the more likely the phone is to break.

There are about ten different things that SquareTrade tests on each phone. Those things include stuff like dunking the phone into water for ten seconds and dropping it from five feet. They recently ran these tests on the new iPhones and a few other phones. Their results are worth noting.

After completing their testing, they reported that both of the new iPhones are more fragile than the iPhone 5. In other words, they are way more likely to break, so you might want to be a bit more careful if you decide to get one of those phones.

Surprisingly though, the new iPhones weren’t the only ones that scored low on the durability test. The Samsung Galaxy S4 got the worst grade of all, and if I had that phone, I’d probably break it the first week. If you are planning to get one of those, I highly suggest that you invest in a strong case. I’ve found my iPhone 5 to be pretty durable, but I’m definitely nervous about upgrading now. As rough as I am on phones, it’s only a matter of time…
