Plasma Speakers: Play Music Through Particle Laser Beams

When we think of plasma, we think of some kind of laser that generates a heat many million times over what we can even imagine, or maybe not. What is plasma anyway? To explain it simply – It is a state of matter similar to gas in which certain particles are ionized. Think of a plasma globe where the rays are constantly dancing around inside it. If you put your hands on one of those globes, it will focus its beams where your fingers are positioned. If you think these globes are cool, I’m sure you are going to love the plasma speakers that people are trying to develop around the world. Plasma speakers are actually plasma rays which you are able to play music through.

A few innovative students over in Seattle (StudentRND) decided that plasma arcs were the coolest things they could possibly play around with. They had apparently seen some plasma speaker tutorials on the Internet (there are a few), but no one had yet come up with a kit that just anyone could put together. They set out to create this kit, and during the process, they managed to create something that was far more impressive than what was previously present in tutorials around the web.

Just like a lot of other innovators, they realized in order to produce these plasma speaker kits, they needed funding so they turned to Kickstarter. After 33 days and a pledge goal of just $2,000, they managed to rake in a whopping $18,574 through 240 backers. What does that mean? Well, it means that if you are interested in putting together your very own plasma speaker, you can soon buy one of these kits and get to work. Never before has a pair of speakers (or potential speakers) been so awesomely cool. Imagine having a pair of industrial designed plasma speakers at your desk playing music while the ionized plasma beam dances away to the beat. If that is not geeky, I don’t know what is.
