When we talk to our friends from around the world on social media, it’s easy to forget the distance. One of the beautiful things about social media (and technology in general) is that it shortens the distance between our friends and us. It makes the world seem smaller and cozier. However, your friends could be living a much different life than you. For example, you might ask yourself, “how much does it cost to run a startup?” The answer swings dramatically, depending on where you live.
Here in the United States, it’s very easy to start a business. In some other countries, it’s not as easy. When I ask myself the question, “how much does it cost to start a business?” the answer is a lot different than what my friends who live elsewhere might say.
Just for the sake of argument, let’s assume you are going to start a tech startup. Let’s say you want to get an office and hire two web developers and one web designer. If we just look at those costs alone, the amount of money required is significantly different based on the geographical location of that office.
This infographic called What Does It Cost To Run A Startup? (by Staff.com) attempts to illustrate the differences in those specific costs around the world. It would be interesting if more places were added, including Tel Aviv and Hong Kong, but this is still a good place to start.
Keep in mind, if this infographic was going to be truly complete, it would include things like the cost of living and taxes. For example, Bit Rebels is based out of Sweden, and the taxes in Sweden are much higher than they are here in the States. On the other hand, people who start a business in Switzerland never have to think about capital gains taxes.
So, it’s all relative if you know what I mean. However, if you want to answer the question “how much does it cost to start a tech startup?” this will at least get you started on your way to figuring out where in the world you want to get an office.
