Floral Skull: 5-Foot Tall Skull Covered In Soft Leather Flowers

There have been a lot of skull sculptures that have come and gone throughout the years, but this one really caught my attention. It’s such a contradiction since skulls usually represent death on some level, and flowers represent life and love. This gorgeous skull design called Floral Skull Leather Sculpture is a 5-foot tall skull adorned in beautiful, handmade, soft leather flowers. Yep, each flower petal you see on these flowers was created from leather.

Jacky Tsai, who is already well known for his skull fashion designs he created for Alexander McQueen, wanted to create a new kind of skull. He wanted to do just what I described, which is to create something that represents the intersection between life and death. Because this skull is so large, it’s hard to see all the detail in these photographs. Just to give you an idea about the magnitude of this project and the creation of the leather flowers – It took 300 days and nights to complete it all.

There were 15 needlesmiths who worked on this skull, and they stitched 1,000 pieces of leather together to create all the leather flowers (which Mr. Tsai estimates to be about 1,000,000 stitches). I wish I could reach out and touch this skull and those flowers to experience this for myself.

The only question left to ask is…What will be done with this skull now? Will it be displayed somewhere in all its glory? I don’t know the answer to those questions, but I’m sure whatever happens to it, it will be taken care of well. If you want to see a few more interesting skulls, you can click over to the Heavenly McDonald’s French Fry Skull (one of my personal favorites) or The Dollar Bill Skull Sculpture (yep, a skull created entirely from money). Enjoy!
