Before I started reading about Autism in my Twitter stream a few years ago, I had never heard of it before. In America, there has been a 600% increase in Autism over the past two decades. Of course, some of that increase can be attributed to awareness and better ways to diagnose it; however, it’s on the rise, there is no question about that. According to Autism Speaks, currently Autism affects 1 out of every 110 American children.
Jill Mullin, an author and educator, put together a beautiful book called Drawing Autism, which is filled with drawings and illustrations all created by artists who have been diagnosed with Autism. I like this especially since for many of us, it’s sometimes hard to completely understand Autism. These heartfelt pictures give us a tiny glimpse of what it must be like to live with the challenges that people who have Autism face everyday.
Autism can manifest itself differently in different people. The book also contains interviews and touching stories related to that. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to agencies that support Autism. You can learn more about this by visiting Drawing Autism on Facebook.
