This is such an interesting concept. It’s an unusual blend of classic elegance and modern technology. If you are familiar with oriental rugs, you know they are beautiful tapestries of intricate designs. Sometimes they are even too pretty to put on the floor to walk on, so people hang them on the wall, many times encased in glass. I haven’t seen a real oriental rug in several years, but the ones I’ve seen in the past were stunning.
Textile designer David Hanauer decided to put a modern day spin on traditional oriental rug designs. He started with aerial view images from Google Earth. He used images of Los Angeles, Las Vegas and other busy cities. According to his website (with the help of Google Translate), “They deal with issues of identity, urban planning or architecture. The pattern represents a photograph, which the computer created. The pattern is then printed on carpet material.”
At first glance, I thought these weren’t very attractive rugs. However, once I looked at them more, I realized there is a whole sentimental aspect here. If I had a very special visit to a far away city, I would love to have a rug like this that represented a view of the city itself. I can really appreciate the creativity in this project. If you would like to request one of these rugs for yourself, you can contact David on David Hanauer.
