Edible & Breathable Balloons Filled With Sugared Helium

Are you tired of the same old desserts in restaurants? Are the triple chocolate fudge cakes, ice cream sundaes and raspberry cheesecakes not doing it for you anymore? Would you like to try a new kind of dessert? How would you like to taste something that will make you laugh, literally? How about sugared helium?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might like to visit Alinea Restaurant in Chicago. Their chef, Grant Achatz, specializes in molecular gastronomy, and he’s created something I’ve never heard of before. It’s a helium balloon dessert.

Apparently it’s a balloon (which is obviously not made from regular latex) filled with helium sugar sprinkled with dried Granny Smith apple. To eat it, you put your lips to the balloon and inhale. It’s a “breathable dessert.” As a side effect, of course, you’ll also get the squeaky, high-pitched Mickey Mouse voice. I know sugar is heavier than helium, so how does the balloon still float when it has the sugar inside? How many calories do you think a breathable balloon has? I guess there are some things, like sugar balloons, that are just meant to be inhaled and not questioned.
