Check out this pin art installation! It’s one of those epic gadgets (or toys rather) that we have all, at some point, toyed with. We used to press our hands, a glass, or whatever we could towards those pins to make a cool pattern on the other side. I am, of course, talking about the pin art gadget that spread such joy around the world when it was first introduced.
I think there are still people out there who find the gadget quite interesting, and if I had one, I am sure I would switch the “pattern” out once a day just as a meditative procedure. Well, time flies, and the cool gadgets of yesterday become the retro gadgets of today, and some people just don’t seem to be able to let go of them.
I guess that is a good thing because when creative people can’t let go, they always come up with something oddly amazing. That creativity certainly applies to designer Lulu Guinness, who took a different turn and created the giant “Be A Pin Up!” installment, which was placed on the street for everyone to have a go at. It was a promotional contest for Lulu’s latest fashion line. It’s basically a huge pin art gadget that any average human can press whatever he or she feels is appropriate into, and, in the process, create a pattern for everyone to check out.
The installment has been a huge hit, and pretty much everyone who walks by gets the urge to try it out. Some are, of course, more daring than others; however, the patterns are always amusing and creative. I hope more artists will take iconic gadgets like this one and create interactive life-size gadgets out of them. It’s the ultimate connector, and it is sure to engage a lot of people. Interaction is getting less and less real with all the gadgets and gizmos that are constantly released, so these gadgets are a step in the right direction.
When it comes to art, there are few more successful creations than installations that are actually interactive. This pin art installation is possibly one of the greatest public installations we have seen here at Bit Rebels. To allow the public to participate in an art piece is pure genius.
Lulu Guinness should be more than proud of this one. I am looking at this pin art installation many years later, and I am still filled with joy and laughter when I look through the images. This should become a lesson in how to engage the public in art. Pure and simple.
I am trying to remember if I have seen something like this previously here on Bit Rebels; however, I can’t for my life find something in the back of my mind that is so creative and so engaging as this art installation.
Digging deeper into the world of the Pin Art Gadget, you find that Claire Parker is the sole inventor of it. According to Wikipedia, Claire actually invented this foundational art gadget back in 1935.
Her creativity is a testament to the power of imagination, and it keeps bringing joy long after her passing back in 1981. I mean, even today, people are enjoying this gadget. Walk into any toy store, and you will probably find at least one version of the pin art gadget. Perhaps not as large as the one in this pin art installation, but definitely a smaller version of it.
Perhaps you have one yourself? If you do, it’s time to give it some attention and care. Put it on the coffee table. I promise you that the next person who visits your home will pick it up and display their, according to them, undisputed creativity. Give it a try!
