Someone asked me the other day if I thought Scrabble was a geek’s game. I thought about it for a moment and said, “Not really, it’s more like a smart person’s game.” Since geeks are smart, I suppose that makes Scrabble a geeky game by default. It’s true though. Think about it. When you are in an intense Scrabble game, and you have the choice of playing “d-o-g” on regular squares or “a-q-u-a” on a triple word, which one do you think your brain will think of first? See, it’s a smart person’s game.
If you are a Scrabble game lover, I thought you might like to see what the world’s largest Scrabble game looks like. It’s a handcrafted work of art. The letters are magnetic so they stick to the vertical board easily. It was created by artist John Kahn, and since he only made 9, that not only makes it the largest Scrabble game in the world, it also makes it one of the most rare. In case you are wondering, yup, it’s for sale right now, but you better have a lot of cash bulging out of your wallet for this one. You can pick it up here on Hammacher Schlemmer for a cool $12,000.
Maybe it would be easier to just make our own. There are a lot of custom Scrabble games out there, and there is really no limit to how you can create it. I put a few pictures below for your inspiration. All you need is a real Scrabble board to use as a guide, and then off you go to make whatever kind will make you smile. People seem to be truly inspired by this classic game, and that’s probably because they know that if they’re good at Scrabble, they must be smart.
