For me, calls to action have always been easier offline than online. It’s easy to ask someone to do something face to face, but online it can feel a little strange. I remember back in 2009 when the general attitude was that asking for retweets was completely cheesy. A lot has changed since then, and now people ask everyone for everything online. One look in my flooded Twitter direct messages and Facebook messages is proof of that. These days though, maybe that’s a good idea. After all, social calls to action work.
Dan Zarrella, who always does such interesting research when it comes to social media, created this infographic called Social Calls To Action Work. It’s jam-packed with data he collected after studying this over a few years. According to him, your action rate will increase if you just ask – even in social media.
According to this infographic, adding ‘please retweet’ or ‘please rt’ to your tweet will actually add to your retweets. Also adding the words ‘please help,’ ‘spread’ and ‘visit’ will also work. After researching the top 10,000 most liked Facebook pages, he found that including words like ‘like,’ ‘comment’ and ‘share’ really made a difference.
If reading this makes you want to add ‘please rt’ to your tweet, but you still feel weird about it, just make sure you do it with proper etiquette, and you’ll be fine. I found a great article about that at 5 Rules Of Twitterquette When Asking For Twitter Retweets. The main thing to remember is if you’re asking for a retweet, leave room for it in the tweet. Nobody wants to have to do surgery on your tweet just to retweet it for you – so no more than 120 characters. This works with blogging too. If you use the words ‘comment,’ ‘link’ and ‘share,’ your wish will more likely come true. I hope you enjoy the information in this infographic as much as I did.
