I’m sure there are a lot of people who will tell me it’s going to take more than a hangover to cure some people’s alcoholism, but this could definitely help. I could see this being more of an alcoholic cure for the person who binge drinks on Saturday nights for example. Researchers at the University of Chile have developed an injection which will induce a terrible hangover upon taking the first sip of alcohol.
Once a person is given this shot, its effects will last for 6 – 12 months. My guess is that anyone who receives this will hate even the smell of alcohol after that amount of time is over. This could be the alcoholic cure many people have been looking for. If the person who receives the shot ignores the hangover feeling and continues drinking, he or she will basically get violently ill and experience an even longer hangover.
With the assistance of technology, these researchers have found a way to stop the enzyme that breaks down the alcohol. Usually a hangover is only felt during the time before the alcohol is broken down. If that enzyme doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, the person will feel sick after just one sip of alcohol, and that hangover feeling will last for a while.
The bad news about this alcoholic cure is that for some alcoholics, the withdrawal would be worse than a severe hangover in the first place, so from that perspective, this could be a double-edged sword. However, I’m sure there are still a lot of people who could benefit from this. My only question is, how safe is it to stop that enzyme from breaking down the alcohol the natural way? This vaccine is not available yet, but if all goes well, it will be available starting in 2015.
