Contrary to popular belief, there’s no such thing as ‘perfection’ in the world of the pro DJ. Irrespective of how good you get, there are always things you can do to improve your art. Striving for ongoing improvement is most important of all for amateurs and up-and-coming names on the scene.
If you expect to be taken seriously, you need to take yourself and your craft seriously. But what kinds of things should you be doing to take things to the next level? You have all the high-end DJ deck, DJ mixers, and general DJ equipment needed to get the job done, but somehow seem to be stagnating.
If this is you, what should you be doing to pull yourself out of your rut? Keep your equipment current and up-to-date; many items are available to purchase with DJ finance to help spread the cost.

1. Gain Perspective
Roughly translated, this basically means stepping back for a moment and considering why you’re DJing in the first place. What exactly is it that drives you as a DJ? Are you all about the satisfaction of sharing your music with your fellow fanatics? Is there nothing like being the life and soul of the party? Are you more about creativity, experimentation, and breaking new grounds?
You need to have at least some kind of a mission and vision as a DJ. Otherwise, you’ll be confined to the generic category indefinitely. It’s not a case of labeling yourself as such, but instead gaining some perspective on what you do and why you do it.
2. Set Goals
You need to have concrete objectives in mind if you’re ever going to achieve them. By goals, this doesn’t mean saying, “I want to be the next billionaire music mogul” and leaving it at that. It means setting small, reachable, measurable, and short-term goals, which will gradually steer you in the right direction.
Think about where you can realistically expect to see yourself in the next six months, one year, two years, and so on. Decide what you want to achieve and then figure out how you’re going to make it happen.
3. Put In The Legwork
Put your strengths to one side for a moment and think about the aspects of DJing you’re not exactly fantastic at. If scratching isn’t your thing and therefore drives you up the wall, take the time to master the basics of the various DJ equipment options.
Leveraging your strengths as a DJ is important, but so too is putting in the legwork to broaden and evolve your talents. Simply sticking with the things you can already do will almost certainly lead to stagnation.
4. Engage Your Audience
Last up; it’s down to you and you alone to get your name out there. This means taking things further than just showcasing your talents – you need to engage and communicate with your audience on a regular basis.
Whether it’s being active on social media or playing as many free gigs as possible to build some kind of familiarity with your audience, it’s something you could be actively doing. Anything you can do to build your brand, establish your authority, and get your name known is something you should be doing right now. – djkit.com
