Teenage Girl Develops Twitter Plugin To Hide TV Spoilers In Tweets

How many times have you DVR’ed your favorite shows only to have them ruined by seeing the spoiler alerts in your Twitter stream? I don’t watch television much, so it hasn’t happened to me, but I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter rant about it. Leave it to a 17-year-old girl to solve this dilemma by creating a browser based Twitter plugin that will hide the spoilers you don’t want to see in your Twitter stream.

The whole situation is really a double-edged sword. It’s fun to watch those shows with friends on Twitter and tweet about it in real-time. I can understand that. It’s not fair to ask people not to use Twitter in that way. However, there is another group of people who don’t want to read about it. They prefer to watch those shows on services like Hulu later. What we really need is a way to hide the information about the shows that we don’t want to see, and a new Twitter plugin called Twivo is designed to do just that.

Jennie Lamere, a high school senior who hopes to work for Google someday, developed this browser based Twitter plugin out of necessity. She found that she was always avoiding Twitter on Tuesdays to avoid spoiler alerts. She didn’t want to have to do that anymore, so she developed this plugin.

When Jennie launches Twivo in a few weeks, it will be available for anyone to use on Chrome or Firefox. It’s super simple to use. You just enter the name of the show or characters, and any spoiler alert tweets will be hidden from your view. That way, your Twitter followers can tweet all they want about your favorite shows without ruining your Twitter or television experience. You can read more about her story on Mother Jones. You go girl!
