When it comes to moving up in your career, increasing earning potential, and enjoying more job-related opportunities, your performance is what your peers, superiors, and clients consider. The question is, are you doing everything within your power to optimize your performance around the clock?
Creativity is a funny thing. One minute you feel it coursing through your brain, and then the next minute it’s gone. Slippery and elusive would be good words to describe it. If anyone knew how to capture creativity and bottle it up, they’d already be selling it in massive quantities. But, alas, we do not.
We do, however, have a pretty clear understanding of some different techniques that frequently assist in sparking creativity. So without further ado, let’s dig in and examine a few of these helpful tactics (and how they can be used to improve on-the-job performance in nearly any industry).
Most people opposed to the idea of keeping a diary or journal. However, let us recommend that you follow the lead of successful and creative minds like Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, and Beatrix Potter and keep an idea journal.
“An idea journal is not a diary where you have to record all of the details of your day (though you can if you want to!)” entrepreneur Nicole Bianchi writes. “Rather, it’s a place where you jot down daily goals, achievements, observations, ideas for projects, quotes, or other bits of inspiration.”
An idea journal can be a notepad on your phone, a small pocket-sized moleskin notebook, a Word document on your computer, or a pad of paper in the glove compartment of your vehicle. It’s less important what the idea journal is and more important that you have one to record good thoughts as they come to you.
Are you familiar with vagus nerve stimulation? It’s the process of energizing your body’s vagus nerve to achieve less stress, better sleep, happier moods, and more focus.
You can stimulate the vagus nerve in a variety of ways – including through breathing exercises and exposure to cold water – but there’s another option that’s easier and more convenient. It involves the use of Xen headphones, which feature a built-in vagus nerve stimulator that syncs up with your music and provides powerful benefits while you work.
Many people scoff at the idea of breaks – viewing them as frivolous and distracting. However, the research suggests something much different. By taking breaks – smart and calculated ones, that is – you actually refresh the mind and inspire it to create when you return to the task at hand.
The Pomodoro Technique, developed by Franceso Cirillo, is commonly used by creatives who want to stay refreshed and inspired throughout the day. It involves setting a timer for 25 minutes and working on a single task during this stretch. After you’ve tackled that task, you take a five-minute break. During this break, you get up, walk around, and do something – like drink some water or walk to the mailbox. Then you return to work and repeat the process with another 25-minute block of work.
Paleto’s principle, more commonly known as the 80/20 Rule, states that 20 percent of your effort produces 80 percent of your results. So what does this mean for you and your creativity?
It means you should identify the 20 percent of your effort that’s responsible for sparking most of your creativity. Then you need to focus on these elements and discard the rest.
The field of nootropics is one that’s laced with uncertainty and skepticism – at least from the outside looking in. But there’s a lot of evidence to suggest that various drugs, supplements, and extracts can help the brain maximize performance. More specifically, certain nootropics are known to boost creativity. This includes L-Theanine, Bacopa Monnieri, and Phosphatidylserine (PS).
Don’t just read this article and nod your head. It’s important that you put these tips into action – like today. The longer you wait to give these creativity-boosting tactics a try, the less likely it is that you’ll actually do them. Pinpoint one idea that you can use immediately. Which one will it be?
