Many people say they want to be a leader in business, but do they really know what that means? Back in the old days, the words ‘management’ and ‘leadership’ were often interchangeable. I remember about seven or eight years ago when corporate culture changed, and people started recognizing the difference between management and leadership. If you had to choose one word that describes leadership, what would it be? For me, that word would be ‘service.’
Whether a leader in business is helping others see their own potential, setting an example for others to follow or creating a vision and path for others to step into, leadership is about service. It’s about ‘the other person’ if that makes sense. It used to be said that people were either born leaders or not, but now most people agree that leadership skills can be taught. It definitely comes easier for some people than others, but I believe anyone can learn how to become a leader in business.
If you decide to hone your own leadership skills, just know you won’t be taking the easy path. Being a leader is not for the weak. You’ll work harder than anyone else. You’ll be criticized more than you like, blamed more than you deserve, and you’ll have to make tough decisions quickly.
“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts.
It is about one life influencing another.” ~ John C. Maxwell
However, you’ll be driven by the sense of pure joy you’ll feel when you watch others succeed. Like this infographic says, you’ll “be driven by building something and love it when your team achieves the impossible!” This infographic called A Look At The Best Leaders In Business by Corporate Coach Group will give you some insight into what it takes to be a great leader in business. I was inspired when I read through this, and I hope you enjoy it too!
