I don’t know if it’s the designer or the music lover in me, but I’ve always had a thing for album art. With music downloads (legal or otherwise) being all the rage nowadays, I still find myself very much drawn to the tacticity of opening a real, ‘live’ cd box. And it’s not only the artwork, but the packaging too.
What’s really impressed me, is as we move into the ‘digital age’, many bands are moving along with it and adapting their album releases and packing in unique and creative ways.
The groundbreaking band, Nine Inch Nails, released a full album under a Creative Commons license and Keane releasing their single exclusively on a USB stick, although Barenaked Ladies did it way back in 2004.
And let’s not forget one of the greatest bands of all time! :) RadioHead, whose In Rainbows release was released ondisk and was sold online for whatever amount fans wanted to pay!.
But now, one of my favorite actor/MCs, Mos Def, has released his new album on the humble t-shirt! Featuring the album cover on the front and the lyrics on the back, you download the actual tracks via a unique code on the hang tag! VERY COOL!
What are some of your favourite album covers/packaging? Know of any bands that’s released their albums on cool stuff, that I’ve left out – I’m sure there are many! Post them up in the comments, I’d love to see them!
