Of all the very, very worthy causes in that we see people work hard to support, the one that speaks to me the most is world hunger. We all have things that touch us more than others, and although I’m very concerned about the environment and there being enough clean water for everyone, when I think about how many people in the world don’t know where their next meal is coming from, it breaks my heart every time.
If you stop and think about that for a moment, it makes the other things in life that we worry about seem so irrelevant. Somehow it just doesn’t seem right that I ponder what color to make my hair next or which shoes to wear when there are children somewhere right now who are crying because they are hungry. Last year alone, almost 8 million children died because of poor nutrition, and that’s just children. Overall, those numbers are staggering. At any given time, there are over 925 million people in the world who are hungry and don’t have enough food.
When I see a design that raises awareness about this and gets people thinking about it, I have to write about it. These are baguette tables created by Gosia and Tomek Rygalik from Studio Rygalik. The inspiration behind them is the fact that the amount of food thrown away in Vienna could feed half the population of Graz. Their purpose is to raise awareness about food waste and get people talking about how much food we throw away. They’re made of stale bread which was originally supposed to be put in the trash. I like this a lot!
