I just love these little skulls! The majority of people on the Internet that I’ve read comments from think they are creepy, but I think they are adorable. What a great idea to transform those boring spice racks we all have taking up space on our kitchen counters.
The artist, Helen Altman, molded these small skulls from natural materials like spices and seeds. She used glue to keep the shape together properly. When they dried, they looked like what you see here. There are a total of 42 skulls in the skull spice rack below, and each one is made from a different spice. A few of the spices she used are mustard seed, millet, lemon grass and black sesame seeds.
I bet in addition to being a fun decoration on the wall, these also act as a natural potpourri. I wonder if it would be possible to create skulls from other ingredients too. If you think about it, there are a lot of edible things in our kitchens, just like these obscure spices, that we never use. Before today, I never thought about the artistic potential that might be sitting right there. I can think of so many ideas that would be fun to try using this method. Thank you for sharing these with the world Helen!
