DIY LEGO Tumbly: A Sleek Lego System For Batman Fans

I don’t know which is better, this DIY LEGO system which makes a bat tumbly or the business model this guy set up. Both of them are equally brilliant in their own way. That’s right, you can’t buy this exact LEGO system in any store, but you can buy his instructions for super cheap. That’s pretty smart! What a way to capitalize on intellectual property.

This was created by an artist named Mahjqa. According to his website, he spent months trying to get this black bat tumbly just right. Since it’s not an official LEGO system, instead of selling them at the risk of being penalized, he’s just selling the instructions which include a .zip file with 140 or so JPEG images and detailed instructions. Your name will also be embedded in the file so if it’s distributed, he’ll know who did it. Mahjqa writes, “This clever anti-piracy scheme may not be foolproof, and eventually the instructions will find their way online. There is nothing I can do about that.” Well, I think it’s pretty darn smart.

You can see his LEGO tumblers and the bat in the video below. He’s done an excellent job on this, and you can see the image with all the parts he used below. I can’t even imagine the patience it would require to make a LEGO system like this from scratch. If I made one of these, I would probably have to put it in a glass box for display. If you are a LEGO and a batman fan, this might be just the weekend project you’ve been looking for. You can learn more about Mahjqa and see more of his unique LEGO builds on Vayamenda, Flickr and on his YouTube channel. There’s a making-of video in there that’s really good too. I’m totally impressed!
