The Floating Eco-Friendly Airport Design Proposed For London

I’ve seen articles about this floating airport design for a few months now, but what I didn’t realize until today is that it’s actually being considered as a real solution to deal with London’s need for a larger airport. That could potentially mean that someday soon London will have its own floating airport. The reason behind it being able to float is simply that by building it on water, there won’t have to be any homes destroyed in order to complete construction, and no valuable land will be used.

The company behind this massive project, Beckett Rankine, claims that it will be somewhat eco-friendly. However, I’m having a hard time understanding that since airports in general are notoriously not eco-friendly with their fuel, noise, garbage and energy use. This airport will have all those things, so I’m not sure how the eco-friendly part fits in, but I’m sure it does somewhere.

This airport design, called the Goodwin Airport, will also have four runways and be able to fly people in and out all day and all night. In the future, they are also proposing that the airport will provide transportation to other close by cities via an underground train system. I suppose if the airport is floating, that would mean the underground train or subway would also be at least partially underwater. That would be an amazing ride!

I have never been to London (although I’m planning to go there for the first time in April of 2014) so I don’t know anything about the weather there. I assume they don’t have hurricanes there like we do here. If something like that were built off the coast of Miami (just as an example), the first thing I would think of is what would happen during the hurricanes? One thing is for sure, everything about this airport design from the airport itself to the underground subway will have an incredible view!
