5 UK Netflix Series To Binge-Watch In 2019

We’ve all been there. It could be a quiet Friday evening, a lazy Sunday afternoon or a midweek chill-out session. Sometimes all you want to do is grab a great variety of snacks, put your feet up and power up Netflix.

The great news is that the TV streaming service has a whole host of great binge-worthy series lined up for 2019. Favorite shows like The Crown and Black Mirror are all set to return, whilst new exclusive programs are also coming your way.

Read on to find out more about the hottest series coming to UK Netflix in 2019.

Russian Doll

Russian Doll premiered on Netflix in February and it’s already enjoyed rave reviews. This dark comedy stars Natasha Lyonne (from Orange is the New Black) who dies on her 30th birthday and is forced to repeat the night over and over again.

With a Groundhog Day premise and quick-witted lines (written by Lyonne herself and Amy Poehler of Parks and Rec fame), Russian Doll carefully balances the hilarious with the existential.

Dating Around

If you’re a fan of shows like Celebs Go Dating and First Dates, then you’ll love Dating Around. Produced by Netflix themselves, this reality series follows six American singles of all ages and backgrounds through a series of blind dates.

Whilst the show might be a bit too polished for some UK viewers (think more The Hills than First Dates), it’s bound to be heart-warming and life-affirming, if a little awkward.

The Crown

Fans of this Netflix original can rejoice, as the Crown is set to return to our screens later this year. The series, which follows the trials and tribulations of Queen Elizabeth II has been one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed series to date.

Whilst the last series ended in the early ’60s (after the Profumo Scandal and the birth of Prince Edward), series 3 will continue following the Monarch’s reign.

In this new series, Oscar-nominated actress Olivia Coleman will take over from Claire Foy as the Queen, whilst Tobias Menzies will play the Duke of Edinburgh, Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret and Gillian Anderson will be brought in to play the new Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Turn Up Charlie

Whilst Luther may be over, for now, you won’t have to wait long to see Idris Elba again. The British star (and World’s Sexiest Man) has produced his own comedy series which will premiere on Netflix in March.

The series (which Elba also stars in) follows the life of a struggling DJ turned babysitter. Being a DJ himself, we can expect Elba to deliver some honest laughs and some very British humour.

Our Planet

National treasure David Attenborough will narrate this eight-part nature documentary series, which is produced by the same team as Planet Earth and Blue Planet.

Much like its predecessors, Our Planet will take viewers on a trip to the world’s most precious natural habitats and include jaw-dropping footage of some of the world’s most incredible species.

Our Planet was filmed over 4 years, in 50 different countries and the team employed over 600 crew members. Basically, Netflix has pushed the boat out for its first nature series, and so you won’t want to miss it.

The Central Park 5

In her TV series directorial debut, Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time, Selma) takes on the story of the famous Central Park Jogger case form 1989. In the case, five young black men were convicted of attacking a jogger, before being acquitted in 2002.

The series stars Michael K. Willams (The Wire) alongside Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel).

DuVernay has tackled race issues in American before, in her award-winning documentary, 13th. As such, we can expect this new drama to be important, powerful and harrowing.

All series mentioned in this article will launch on Netflix at some point this year. You can enjoy them by subscribing to Netflix via your TV, mobile or tablet (remember it’s possible to pay with PayPal on Netflix). Don’t miss out.
