Ahh… The Empire Strikes Back. It’s by far my favorite of all the Star Wars movies. I was just a little kid when it came out, but I remember I wanted to see it over and over again. I even agreed to do my sister’s chores for a month if she let me borrow the movie ticket money from her.
I remember walking into the theater each time knowing that I had to have the perfect seat, right in the middle, to get the full effect. I was prepared to knock some kid’s popcorn over if I had to in order to get the seat I wanted.
I was serious, and nothing was going to stop me from hearing Princess Leia say to Han Solo, “I love you” and him saying back, “I know.” For a little girl, that was big time romance. I dreamed I would find my own Prince Charming while flying in a spaceship and fighting stormtroopers somewhere in the galaxy someday. So, I’m happy to announce, after much anticipation and months of reading about it, as of last Tuesday, The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, a beautiful coffee table book by J. W. Rinzler, was finally released.
This book is filled with photographs and details we’ve never seen or heard of before. According to what I’ve read, it was a very difficult film to make, and Mr. Rinzler does a great job telling the whole story from screenplay to completion. According to Carrie Fisher, “It’s the acid flashback they’ve been promising us without the mess and fuss of dropping acid… again. It’s a trip worth taking.” You can read a fabulous Vanity Fair interview with the author here and you can purchase the book at Amazon here.
