In case you don’t live in the States, I’ll quickly explain what a Primetime Emmy Award is. It’s an award presented in recognition of excellence in American primetime television. It’s basically the television equivalent of a Grammy Award (for music) and an Academy Award (for movies).
For the past two years, the only television I’ve really watched is the Super Bowl in January. I might have picked up an American Idol episode here or there, but nothing regular, so I’m not very familiar with the television shows that were nominated. You can check out the full list here. The award ceremony will air on Sunday, September 18th.
However, even though I’m not much into television, I’m very into Twitter. This year, for the first time, people are raising a very interesting question. Does the sheer number of Twitter followers a celebrity or show has influence an Emmy award win? Nobody really has the answer to this question right now. The show’s organizers joined forces with Column Five Media to take a look at the number of Twitter followers the nominees have. Ryan Seacrest (nominated for American Idol) has everyone beat by a long shot, and Jimmy Fallon (nominated for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) comes in second place. Of course if these celebrities tweet about their nomination and the event, they will create a buzz about it, but will that actually affect the outcome? Personally, I doubt it. I guess we’ll see in a few weeks what the real answer is. Thank you to @gupshupblog for sending this to me!
