The Power of Love | The World Gets Smaller

Today, when tragedy strikes, whether it is earthquakes, floods or other natural calamities, the whole world cries with the people that are hurting. This is one sign that always puts a smile on my face.  What do I mean here?  You see, everyday we are faced with our own problems, we see crime and hatred happening all around us, it’s enough to make you ask “What is the world coming to?”

But recently, we can feel hope and there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. I believe that technology has had a hand in this. Social media has made a big impact.  Not only by getting the news or events made known to so many people quickly, but by also enabling ways and means for the world to know how to help those in dire need.

I have personally experienced people reaching out and wanting to help when a big typhoon hit my own country, the Philippines, last year.  It was Typhoon Ondoy, a lot of people lost their lives and their homes, even now, some people are just starting to rebuild their homes and their own lives.

The latest tragedy is the Earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010.  So many people again lost their properties and a lot have lost their lives.  But with the help of everyone from all over the world, there is hope. The power of love can surpass any distance.  The world gets smaller, thanks to social media and people who have the heart to sacrifice what they have in order to give those who are less fortunate than themselves.

I was browsing through my FaceBook homepage and saw an update from one of my friends.  I clicked on it and watched the video of a remake of the famous We are the World song made popular by the USA for Africa back in 1985.  I was moved by the song and the coming together of artists from all music genre.  It was very inspiring to see the artists share their voices to come up with a remake of the song that will enable food, shelter and hope for the people of Haiti so they can start rebuilding their lives again.
