Up Close & Personal When The Argentina Iceberg Flips

Okay, have you seen this tourist video yet of the Argentina flip? Wow, that sounds like a dance move, but it is actually a glacier in Argentina flipping over while a boat full of tourists are passing by. I have actually watched this video a couple of times because there is one part that is just WHOA amazing! Like most people, I find the power of nature and nature in general really fascinating. I wish I liked science when I was in school, but better late than never to learn about it I guess. It seems I have become a regular observer of how mother nature can really interrupt our lives, or how it can make life better.

Living in a state with record numbers of tornadoes this year has turned me into a novice Jim Cantoré Twitter follower. Instead of chasing storms, I chase Jim Cantoré, no not really, but I can’t believe how excited a community can get when he arrives in their hometown. Really, that can’t be something to be giddy about can it? People, if he arrives, it is NOT good news. Proudly, I also have learned weather hashtag tracking as well – thank you. I digress.

According to the YouTube description from the uploaded video page, the tourist describes his account of what happened, “This iceberg was calved by Argentina’s Uppsala glacier. While we were passing by it with a catamaran, the huge berg lost a part of itself (look at the right side sinking) and then flipped over with a huge roar. In the process of melting this happens all the time, but it is seldom that it is captured on video WHEN it happens…”

These tourists were probably pretty scared and amazed at the same time when they realized holy crap that thing could send a wave over their boat. I would be full of adrenaline for sure. I will admit they were really close, and the tourists could have been in an amazing video gone wrong. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and they made a few major news outlets and are getting some brief YouTube fame. I bet the creative filmmakers will study this for their next end-of-the-world special effects movie! What do you think?
