WTH: Eat LIVE Crab From A Vending Machine

I admit, I like my food to have faces. I’m a meat eater all the way. After I wrote this article about how to kill a lobster in a humane way, I met my friend @veganmeans. He sent me a copy of his fabulous book, and after reading it, I tried not to eat meat for a while.

Since then, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m a carnivore, period. Maybe I should be ashamed, I don’t know. All I do know is that my mouth waters just thinking about rare steak. Even though I enjoy eating things that once had parents, I can admit that this is wrong on a whole other level. I know, some people will call me a “dumb American.” That’s cool, whatever.

I guess we just have to ask ourselves, where do we draw the line? I can rationalize in my brain that a lobster feels pain for about a minute while he is cooked in boiling water; however, it’s hard to rationalize putting a live crab in a tight container inside a vending machine like he was a bag of Cheetos or something.

This vending machine was created by a Chinese man and is currently in China. Soon; however, it may work its way over to Japan. According to Japan Probe, “The inside of the machine is kept at 5 degrees Celsius, a temperature cold enough to make the crabs go into a state of hibernation. If the crab is dead-on-arrival, they promise to give you three free crabs.” Holy mother, are you kidding me?

Ok, now I’m really, really going to sound stupid, but I just have to ask this question… What do people do with the crabs once they open the package? You’ll see in the video below that the crab is very alive and well at that point. Do they just take a bite out of this moving animal? Is there some secret pot of boiling water nearby? Do they kill it with their bare hands right then and there? This first picture below looks like something out of the movie “Aliens.” This may give me bad dreams tonight while I’m sleeping. This is definitely one for the WTF category here on Bit Rebels, if we had one.
