12 Retro Breakfast Cereals That I Wish Would Come Back

Just a little while ago, I finished writing an article about some Game Boy cartridges redesigned for our lives today. It got me all in a retro mood, so I decided to keep the trend going and write about another retro staple from our childhoods…Breakfast cereal. You may wonder how breakfast cereals could be retro; after all, they’re just as popular now as they were back then. But when you look at the pictures below, I think you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

The aisle in the supermarket that has all the breakfast cereals seems like the most evil aisle in the whole store to me. We’ve all heard stories about how certain cereals are strategically placed where the kiddies can spot them quickly. They beg their parents to buy them, their parents do, and the cycle of starting the day off by eating sugary crap begins. When I was little, I used to choose breakfast cereals based on the prizes inside the boxes. If there was a great toy inside a yucky cereal, I’d ask my mother to buy it and choke through it for a month just to get what was inside.

Aside from all that diabolical marketing, there have been some great classic breakfast cereals released over the years. Refined Guy put together a list of 30 Breakfast Cereals Based On Movies & TV Shows, and from that list, I’ve chosen my favorite 12 to share with you here. Wouldn’t it be great to nom on a bowl of Gremlins or Rainbow Brite tomorrow morning? One of the longest running breakfast cereals based on a TV show is Fruity Pebbles. It was released in 1971, and it’s still on the shelves today. It’s one of the great classics for sure. It’s hard to believe some of these breakfast cereals were real, but they were all on grocery store shelves at one point in time. What are your favorites from back in the day?
