A Rare Look At The War In Afghanistan Captured On An iPhone

As an American, I know that our country is almost always at war, or at least it has been for the past decade or longer. I don’t claim to understand all the tiny details and controversial politics surrounding the reasons why, but sometimes I feel like the leadership in this country has gone to the dogs. It’s easy to get a false sense of security when the wars we fight are typically not in the physical location of our own country. If they were, and if we saw the turmoil of war on a daily basis like some other people do, we might feel more passionate about promoting peace.

If I’m not mistaken, America’s longest war ever is the war in Afghanistan. It’s been going on since 2001. I wonder how long it will continue to go on, I mean, a war can’t last forever, right? Award-winning photographer Balazs Gardi recently spent five months in Helmand (one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan) taking pictures of the war with his iPhone for Foreign Policy Magazine.

Just think, when that war first started, the iPhone hadn’t even been invented yet (and Facebook didn’t exist yet either). Now we’re almost 5 generations into the iPhone, and we can view these very rare photographs through iPhone photography.
