Do you have a secret about yourself that you’ve never told anyone? Is it something so juicy that it would completely freak people out so you’ve decided to bury it deep within your soul? If you told your family, offline friends or social media friends about it, would they still love you anyway? Supposedly we all have at least one of those secrets. I know I have two or three. If I told you what they are right now, you would be so shocked that you would probably have to read the sentence twice. I won’t go there, but do you ever feel like you need to confess it to someone? What if there was a place where people could make secret confessions that were completely anonymous? That would be kinda neat.
That is what this public art project is all about. It’s called Confessions, and it’s a way for people to publicly make secret confessions. They way it works is that people go behind a curtain (which looks a little like a voting booth here in the States), and they anonymously write their confession on a piece of paper. Then they slide that private piece of paper through a slit in the wall where it then drops into a bin with tons of other confessions where it will be mixed up in that sea of secret confessions.
Candy Chang, the artist who came up with this idea, then pulls each confession out of the big bin and hangs it on the wall for the world to walk by and read. She even chooses a few of her favorites to paint on the wall (which you can see a picture of below). This all took place earlier this month in Las Vegas, and by the time it was over, there were over 1,500 secret confessions that were displayed on the walls. According to Candy’s website, “Over half were about sex, love, or fears of dying alone.” The purpose of this project was to give people comfort in knowing that they aren’t alone. Everyone struggles with their own experiences as they journey through life in an attempt to attain happiness and feel fulfilled, and we all have secrets.
