The Art Of Eating Bugs: It’s More Common Than You Think!

We really do like to embrace all different cultures from around the world. After all, Richard, Misty and I all live in different countries. However, sometimes when I see this stuff, I just gotta stare and wonder, are they for real? The answer is yes, and just like some people would probably find some of the things I do in my daily life strange, I think this is about as strange as it gets for me.

As I try to remember that these pictures are not from an episode of Survivor, I will remind you of some other examples of “food customs” we’ve featured which I would consider unusual. First, there was this article that Richard wrote about Insect Sushi. Yes, some people in the world get excited about eating a friggin caterpillar on a bed of rice. Then, there were the burgers made out of killer snakes. I admit, the picture I put in that article of the snake getting his head chopped off with an axe was a little graphic, but c’mon, I hate snakes. And, last but not least, there was the “unusual foods on a stick” article. That one came complete with silkworms, sea horses and scorpions on a stick. However, in my defense, that article also featured a chocolate covered Twinkie, so give me a break.

According to Wikipedia, Entomophagy is the practice of eating insects as food. Apparently this is common in Thailand, Cambodia, China, Africa and many other countries. We typically don’t eat insects in the States, which could be yet another reason why much of the world doesn’t like us very much. Either way, according to an avid insect eater from China, “We eat everything that flies except planes, everything that has four legs except the table and chairs.” Well, great, more power to you. I’m going to go puke now.

All joking aside, if there ever was a way to make insects look appetizing, I think the people in these pictures have done a great job. If you are living in a part of the world where you don’t typically eat these, then perhaps you, like me, will enjoy the fascination of looking at these pictures and appreciating a different culture.
