2014 World Cup Will Test Robocop Facial Recognition Technology

Coming To A Police Precinct Near You …

Brazilian police officers will use “Robocop-like” glasses at the 2014 World Cup in Brasil. The “Robocop-like” glasses will be equipped with facial recognition technology that can quickly identify and scan those who attend the 2014 World Cup. The device is based on a hi-performance wearable computer with a bi-directional video/audio system that is operated as video glasses connected to a mobile processor running video analytics, face recognition, and LPR software. Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro Military Police officials (which is where the first and final games for the World Cup will be hosted), have been given training on how this technology works.

Major Leandro Pavani Agostini of Sao Paulo’s Military Police said, “It’s something discreet because you do not question the person or ask for documents. The computer does it.” A tiny camera is molded into the glasses which captures 400 facial images per second, compares biometric data at 46,000 points on a face, and sends them to a central computer database storing up to 13 million faces. The system is designed to match known criminals and terrorists wanted by police. The camera will be used to scan faces up to 50 meters away and can be adjusted to search and hunt down a specific target/individual up to 12 miles away. This allows the police to monitor many different locations and events (airports, bus terminals, schools, malls, sports events, etc.) at the same time.

Blend this with AR Drone technology, and this could be an exciting event. If all goes well, I anticipate the US and other countries to test drive the technology thereafter, if they haven’t already done so. Additionally, plastic surgeons should expect a spike in mentoplasties, rhinoplasties, otoplasties, and rhytidectomies. Full Story by Robin Yapp on The Telegraph.
