As it turns out, smartwatches are becoming big business, which will of course drive the quality forward. When people first started talking about smartwatches, most did not know what to expect. There are features not yet implemented that could really revolutionize mobile computing, and that is where most smartwatch developers want to put their focus. When Samsung announced their Galaxy Gear smartwatch a lot of people raised their eyebrows.
It was a beautiful smartwatch (no doubt) but was it to similar to the already successful crowdfunded Pebble smartwatch? Fast forward a little and we have the results. Samsung recently announced that they had shipped 800,000 of the Galaxy Gear watches since September. This is of course something that is quite impressive and should be proof enough that smartwatches are really appealing to people.
Samsung is currently also marketing their Samsung Round phone, which by the looks of it is not exactly enjoying the same success as the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The Round phone is Samsung’s first stab at creating a phone that uses their flexible display in a way they thought would appeal to people. However, it turns out that people do not really know why they would ever need a Round phone, and Business Korea reports that Samsung is only selling about 100 or so Round phones a day in the country, which is the only country Samsung’s currently selling their phone in.
Samsung believes their Galaxy Gear smartwatch is now the most sold smartwatch on the market, and they may very well be right, but there is one thing we are being misled to believe. When Samsung says they have shipped 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches it does not mean they have been sold to consumers. They have merely been shipped to retailers. Therefore, it might still be too early to say that Samsung’s quite innovative smartwatch is actually the most sold smartwatch on the market. Other smartwatch developers might want to take notes as it is important to be first, and Samsung proves that with their popular smartwatch. Question is what we’ll see next and who is going to present it.
