Apple is currently in the process of constructing their new campus called Apple Campus 2. Work began back in 2014 and is expected to be open in 2017 (as announced during their latest keynote.) When completed the new campus will accommodate 13,000 of Apple’s employees and have a range of different departments under its roof.
The cost of the land acquired to build the new campus is estimated somewhere around $300 million. Initial cost predictions for the entire project were estimated at $500 million. However, new calculations reveal the project is now nearing a cost of $5 billion. Quite a steep increase, but nonetheless one that Apple could surely afford.
Not much has been revealed about the new Apple Campus 2 more than a few trickles of information announced by the media now and then. This, of course, follows Apple’s continuing secrecy about everything that they are working on. Apple has many times been called one of the most secretive companies in the world and looking at the company’s history it’s probably true. Not much is revealed until Apple themselves decide that the time is right.
However, new aerial footage of the Apple Campus 2 reveals quite a bit about the layout and design of the large structure and campus grounds. When complete, the new campus will house more than 7,000 trees. Even though the current layout of the campus holds 80% structures and 20% recreational areas, this number will be reversed. Also, Apple is going all in on solar power by layering the entire roof the “Infinite Loop” with acres of solar panels.
Altogether, the “Infinite Loop” will house a café for 3,000 sitting people, 1,000 seat auditorium, 300,000 square feet (28,000 m2) of R&D facilities, a fitness center, and an orchard. Also included is a dedicated generating plant as the primary source of electricity that is powered by natural gas and other more environmentally sound means.
Have a look at the videos below and get a sneak peak at the Apple Campus 2 construction progress and, of course, the massive scale of the Infinite Loop itself. It’s massive! There is no doubt that when it is completed, it will take Apple to new heights.
