Clothing Cam Snaps Food Pics And Calculates Calories More Accurately

If you’ve ever been on a diet before, you know that counting calories is a critical component for success. If you can figure out how to eat less calories than you burn, you’ll lose weight. Sounds simple, right? Not so much. Counting calories can be a pain in the butt, not to mention it can be tough to get an accurate calorie count. Once again, technology is coming to the rescue. Now there’s a clothing cam that takes food pics and calculates your caloric intake.

According to the Journal of Measurement Science and Technology, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are working on perfecting their clothing cams. Yep, they are developing clothes that have tiny cameras embedded into them. Whenever you eat something, the cameras will take a pic, create a model with it, and then spit out a surprisingly accurate number of calories you are eating.

This reminds me of those lifelogging cameras some people wear that take random pictures constantly throughout the day, only this time, it’s for dieters. Unlike a lifelogging camera that you might wear around your neck, these cameras are embedded into your clothing. They are specifically designed to provide an accurate calorie count for the things you eat, and it does that by taking and analyzing food pics.

By using some sophisticated 3D modeling techniques, these little cameras can even accurately measure the portion size you’ve just put on your plate. Once this is perfected, it will be able to help people lose weight, especially those who have chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. You would think it might be difficult to count calories from food pics, but this little device is able to do it with only a 3.7% margin of error. Impressive!
