How To: Delete Yourself From The Internet [Video]

Do you know anyone over the age of 20 and under the age of 60 who doesn’t have a social media account? I know one person who only has one social media account, but not anyone who doesn’t have any. Social media is just part of our culture these days, and unless you live in a completely remote part of the world, chances are you’ve opened at least one social media account in your lifetime. What if you woke up one day and decided you wanted to delete yourself from the Internet? Would you know how?

Since almost everything we do offline can be somehow traced to something online, our offline and online lives are very comingled, even though some people still try to separate them. If you were going to delete yourself from the Internet, you’d probably start with deleting your social media accounts, right? Do you know how to do that so they are actually deleted?

There is much of our lives that is documented outside social media accounts though (have you Googled yourself lately?). If you were really going to delete yourself from the Internet, you’d have to erase signs of you from everywhere, not just social media sites.

The good news is, if you decide you want to go undercover and remain anonymously incognito in the online world, you don’t have to figure out how to do it on your own. Technology writer Jemima Kiss and Guardian journalist Mark Rice-Oxley walk you through the steps in this very informative video.

Each step along the process is different, and each site has its own procedure for how you have to delete yourself. In some cases, you may never be sure you are completely deleted. However, with some time and effort, you can pretty much delete yourself from existence. In doing so, you will basically take a trip back in time to a place where there are no digital interruptions of any kind.
