I think most of us remember the submarine car that James Bond sported in the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me. The car, a Lotus Esprit, has become a pop culture phenomenon ever since we saw it in the silver screen. To be able to go from being a speed demon on the road to become an underwater submarine car is something that boggled our minds beyond imagination. What I think we all ask ourselves these days is why we haven’t seen these kinds of cars for sale yet.
Entrepreneur and billionaire pioneer Elon Musk is known for his eccentric ideas, his latest project, is right up there with all the rest of them. Forget the super fast electric cars, forget even the stars, Elon Musk is about to take on the seas in a way that only James Bond has been able to do so far. Yes, Mr. Musk did purchase the authentic James Bond submarine car in an auction recently for the price of $860,000.
Musk’s idea about a real submarine car goes all the way back to when he was a little boy. No doubt must the fictional idea have spawned some great inspiration in this little boy’s head. His own recollection of euphoria and the disappointment he felt when first seeing the car on the silver screen and later learning that it was just a fictional idea, is a true testament to his own stubbornness to realize the impossible.
“It was amazing as a kid in South Africa to watch James bond in the The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater. I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform.“
Well, Elon Musk, now has the legendary James Bond submarine car in his possession and is planning to do epic things with it. He wants to add a Tesla engine into the car and then actually see if making this submarine car work as seen on the movie screen is a possibility. Should he succeed, I think we all know what comes next! Is Tesla going to start selling a submarine car before we even hit the year 2020? I guess only time will tell.
